Groundhog Day 2012 – Whooooo Cares!?

2 Feb

groundhog

“….and it’s always February 2nd, and there’s nothing I can do about it!”

Good news for all those into the idea of celebrating made-up holidays like Flag Day or Chanukkah. Today is February 2nd, which means it’s Groundhog Day, that special day on the calendar where the national media focuses in on an over-sized rat in an irrelevant town in Pennsylvania. Anyone who graduated from kindergarten knows the deal; if the groundhog sees his shadow, we have six more weeks of winter, and if he doesn’t, spring blooms pre-March and Al Gore makes another documentary. It’s all there in L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology: A New Slant On Life.

In case my sarcastic-enthusiasm isn’t coming off strong enough, let me reiterate; Groundhog Day is Dumb, and anyone who actually believes a beaver-wannabe named Punxsutawney Phil (a drug-dealer nickname if there ever was one) can predict the weather probably should have been beaten publicly by a sex-starved nun a long time ago. The only true reason to celebrate this fictional holiday is that Comedy Central will usually just put Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day on repeat.

(Side Note: Has there ever been a ska-punk rock band named the Punksutawney Phil’s? If not, I shot it. Also, shoot me an e-mail if you want to join my new ska-punk band.)

Marxists Muppets Fight Back Against Socialist Claims

Fox News has had it out for The Muppets ever since their latest film The Muppets came out in November, and with good reason. According to Fox the Muppets spread dangerous propaganda with the intent of “Brainwashing our kids”. Films stars Kermit the Frog and Mrs. Piggy said the claims were “laughable” as seen in the video below.

Ferris, Don’t Break My Heart

I woke up this morning and had at least four messages from my brother. This was really odd since my brother usually doesn’t text me unless it’s really important. Thinking that someone had died or something catastrophic had happened, I checked them before I even got out of bed. But no, it was four frantic messages telling me that I MUST check out this amazing youtube video. (more…)

Wikipedia Goes Dark: College Students Around The Globe Panic

SOPA

Wednesday January 18, 2012 will be a day to remember in internet history. Websites that are used by hundreds of thousands of people all over the planet are shutting down in protest. News sources report that Reddit, Boing Boing, WordPress, Twitpic, and Wikipedia are all closing down their services for 24 hours to protest the SOPA and PIPA legislations.

In the most layman terms: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a bill in the House of Representatives that is intended to help protect the people who create media that can be transmitted easily on the internet. (PIPA is the same except in the Senate.) It’s kind of like Napster all over again. Honestly, I feel like anyone who spent a lot of time making a movie, book, song, etc… should get some sort of monetary reward for it. So this bill, on the surface, doesn’t seem so bad right?

Well, it’s in some of the wording of the bill that these websites and companies are taking umbrage. There is language in HR3261 (SOPA) and S968 (PIPA) that would allow corporations to demand the immediate removal of any website that it sees as affecting their profits. Not only do they demand this outrageous thing, but they want there to be absolutely no judicial oversight. This is not free speech. It’s scandal.

I guess the moral of the story is that you should educate yourself about these bits of legislation and to be active about calling your representatives about it. Just don’t try and look it up on Wikipedia.

Lasagna Cat

Lasagna Cat

I know what many of you are thinking. This blog is called Entertain Me Daily, and there is nothing even remotely entertaining about Garfield, until now. Lasagna Cat videos have been slowly taking the nation by storm. These YouTube artistic masterpieces usually consist of someone physically acting out a Garfield 3 panel sketch followed by a surreal music video. As one viewer recently put it “its one of those things, are we being fooled? Or is it transcendence?” (more…)
