Political Brawling

After a month long recess America’s favorite pseudo-reality show is finally coming back on the air. Tomorrow marks the first Republican Primary debate since the Santorum upsets in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri. A good debate showing by Santorum here could clinch a victory in Michigan and Ohio which would give him a serious leg up coming on Super Tuesday. This news event has a lot of entertainment value.

Kurt Cobain Turns 45

Kurt Cobain Turns 45

Today would have been the 45th birthday of Kurt Cobain. The pitfalls of rock stardom often lead to young deaths and so the game of fan-fiction of what might have been is often very kind to the likes of Cobain and his ilk. The reality though is usually much less pleasant. In fact, it is accurate to say that should he have still been alive Kurt Cobain would most likely be a complete embarrassment or at best a Salinger like recluse. (more…)

It’s Halftime In America, Be Afraid

Guys, have you heard it’s half time in America?! This is good news as for most of us as we were already accepting that it was not only the fourth quarter for America but for the entirety of the planet. Everything changed yesterday though, you see we had asked ourselves “If we can’t trust the Mayans who can we trust?” Luckily an advertisement reminded us of the obvious answer to that question, Clint Eastwood.  (more…)

Marxists Muppets Fight Back Against Socialist Claims

Fox News has had it out for The Muppets ever since their latest film The Muppets came out in November, and with good reason. According to Fox the Muppets spread dangerous propaganda with the intent of “Brainwashing our kids”. Films stars Kermit the Frog and Mrs. Piggy said the claims were “laughable” as seen in the video below.

Getting To Know Skrillex

The New York Times paywall is a way for the Times to try and remain profitable while not completely shutting out readers. You get to read twenty articles in a month. After those twenty you are urged to pay a monthly fee. Well, I’m not so rich as to feel it necessary to pay for information so I take what I can get. This means for about a week or two each month I have to cull my news completely from the Times’ homepage and from various “other sources.”  (more…)

Tim Thomas, Boston Bruins Goaltender, Passes On Hanging With Obama

24 Jan

timthomas

It’s traditional that after winning a national championship, the individuals on a sports teams roster get invited to the White House to meet with the President. This tradition extends to the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, and most NCAA programs. Which is why on Monday the 2010-2011 Boston Bruins were in D.C. to meet with President Barack Obama one day before his State of the Union address.

Notably absent from the gathering, however, was Stanley Cup Playoffs Hero Tim Thomas. The Bruins goaltender issued the following statement following his decision to snub the O invite:

“I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People.

“This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers vision for the Federal government.

“Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL.

“This is the only public statement I will be making on this topic. TT”

For the record, I have no problem with what Thomas decided to do. He’s 100% correct that as a “Free Citizen” he has the right to turn down the trip. I just don’t get why. Seems like a trip to the White House is a pretty rare thing, and to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to protest some vague disappointment in our government as a whole seems silly.

Timmy, if you don’t want to go, send someone else in your place! Take some kid off of the Make A Wish List, or find some liberal looney from Beantown who’d be more than happy to represent you. Slap a fake beard and some goalie pads on Newt Gingrich and send him incognito. It’s like you got a gift certificate for free girl scout cookies but left it in your drawer until it expired. What a waste!

Most dissapointing, however, is Thomas’ lack of explanation. He just points a big ol’ glove hand at all three branches of the government, calls them “out of control,” and refuses to elabaorate. Just dull.

The idea that a professional athlete would turn down an opportunity to meet the President, and then NOT use that very platform to say something completely and blatantly moronic is nearly unbelievable. Claim its a protest of SOPA, blame the CIA for giving Central American dictators cancer, ask serious questions about the super-tall guy at Kim-Jong Il’s funeral, say something racist, Blame Obama for JoePa’s death, do SOMETHING that at least adds some flavor to the whole thing.

If you’re going to turn down a trip to the White House, the least you can do is give us some crazy conspiracy to make fun of you for believing in.

Wikipedia Goes Dark: College Students Around The Globe Panic

SOPA

Wednesday January 18, 2012 will be a day to remember in internet history. Websites that are used by hundreds of thousands of people all over the planet are shutting down in protest. News sources report that Reddit, Boing Boing, WordPress, Twitpic, and Wikipedia are all closing down their services for 24 hours to protest the SOPA and PIPA legislations.

In the most layman terms: SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a bill in the House of Representatives that is intended to help protect the people who create media that can be transmitted easily on the internet. (PIPA is the same except in the Senate.) It’s kind of like Napster all over again. Honestly, I feel like anyone who spent a lot of time making a movie, book, song, etc… should get some sort of monetary reward for it. So this bill, on the surface, doesn’t seem so bad right?

Well, it’s in some of the wording of the bill that these websites and companies are taking umbrage. There is language in HR3261 (SOPA) and S968 (PIPA) that would allow corporations to demand the immediate removal of any website that it sees as affecting their profits. Not only do they demand this outrageous thing, but they want there to be absolutely no judicial oversight. This is not free speech. It’s scandal.

I guess the moral of the story is that you should educate yourself about these bits of legislation and to be active about calling your representatives about it. Just don’t try and look it up on Wikipedia.

Santorum “Bleaugh”-ing Campaign Snafu

santorum

It appears that Google isn’t Rick Santorum’s only problem. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, ask Dan Savage about Santorum. He’ll be happy to tell you all about it.) It seems that Rick Santorum’s other enemy is…Rick Santorum. Seriously, the guy cannot keep his mouth shut and when he blurts out something silly, he automatically and conveniently forgets that he said it.

I point you back to the big scandal of not so long ago where he was quoted as saying “I find it remarkable for a black man to say ‘ no we are going to decide who are people and who are not people.’” Open mouth, insert foot.

This isn’t the only time Mr. Santorum has had some kind of scandal. He was on NPR this weekend and while he was talking about welfare he said, “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.” Open mouth, insert other foot.

If you thought that just because Santorum had run out of feet to stick in his mouth that maybe he would stop saying stupid things, you were wrong. In a TV interview on Wednesday he told John King of CNN that he was “pretty confident” that’s not what he said. He claims he began a word “sort of changed it and it sort of , bleaugh, mumbled it.”

Rick, I’ll lend you a foot. Since your mouth is full I’ll just…

Nevermind.
