Julius Caesar - Chris Gilmour

Trying to squeeze as much daily entertainment as I can from the internet I came across this great piece of art news. I found a new artist working in a medium that I use all the time. As a puppeteer, I work a lot in cardboard. I can make really cool figures out of cardboard that look like lions, ballerinas, or pretty much anything you can imagine. What I can’t do is make a life sized sculpture of Julius Caesar. You heard me…Caesar.

Chris Gilmour works in cardboard even more than I do. Cardboard and glue are his medium, and he makes absolutely fantastic art out of them. You can check out his website here for more of this amazingly cool sculptures.

Cardboard is actually a rather expensive material. Made from certain types of paper and compressed and doubled up time and again it is probably the most overlooked expensive crafting material that is known to man.

People sometimes get really upset about having to dispose of the cardboard but Gilmour decided to make beautiful objects out of it so that the material would no longer be overlooked. It’s a great type of recycling but probably not one that your super would put in the compactor. At least I hope not.

People always ask me how I can be so pessimistic about the human race. I point to Exhibit A: teens are now turning to hand sanitizer to get drunk or high, or just to clean out their insides. I have no idea. I’m so flabbergasted right now by this breaking news.

Michele Bachmann joined the long and illustrious list of politicians, which includes Mitt Romney and Doug Lamborn, who have called Obama a tar baby. She dropped that little bomb whilst elegantly critiquing Obama’s energy policy. Her exact quote “This is just about waving a tar baby in the air and saying that something else is a problem”. Her spokesperson quickly clarified by saying that she was referring to a stick situation and that the statement had no racist undertones. This news could easily erupt into a scandal but since Bachmann has a history of saying outrageous things it’s something of a moot point.

Last night was the television premiere of HBO’s Girls, the best shot that the Home Box Office Channel has had at capturing something like a cultural zeitgeist in years. Of course as a result of the shows hyper realism and its focused interest in female issues being faced by women in their mid 20′s there is a wide array of opinions that have been violently tossed back and forth for months.
