Jamie Moyer Rocks Our Socks
18 Apr
As an avid baseball fan, I always get really excited about silly little trivia facts about the game. Yesterday I got into a conversation about Roberto Clemente and began spouting out useless knowledge. It’s fun, I like knowing that Clemente’s first hit came on April 17, 1955 against the Brooklyn Dodgers in the first game of a double header day at Forbes Field. But really, why does anyone need to know that?
Well, while I was blurting out facts about the former Pittsburgh Pirate, another man was making baseball history. Jamie Moyer of the Colorado Rockies pitched seven scoreless innings yesterday. This, on the surface, isn’t a big deal since many pitchers do this on a daily basis during the season. However, it should be noted that first of all none of his pitches was over 79 miles per hour. Secondly, and most importantly, Moyer, age 49 years and 152 days, is now the oldest man to ever get the win in a baseball game.
This honor was previously held by Jack Quinn of the Brooklyn Dodgers who pitched a winning game in 1932 at age 49 years 70 days. Baseball historians, eat your hearts out. Jamie Moyer is rocking the socks off of baseball this year. Even baseball fans who aren’t necessarily Colorado Rockies fans are rooting him on.
Moyer isn’t letting it go to his head though. There’s always a chance that someone is going to beat his record. In fact, he plans to do it himself in a few days when he’s a couple of days older making him still the oldest baseball pitcher to ever win a major league game.
Keep on truckin’ Jaime. We’re all behind you!
