Political Brawling

Political Brawling

After a month long recess America’s favorite pseudo-reality show is finally coming back on the air. Tomorrow marks the first Republican Primary debate since the Santorum upsets in Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri. A good debate showing by Santorum here could clinch a victory in Michigan and Ohio which would give him a serious leg up coming on Super Tuesday. This news event has a lot of entertainment value.

Kurt Cobain Turns 45

Kurt Cobain Turns 45

Today would have been the 45th birthday of Kurt Cobain. The pitfalls of rock stardom often lead to young deaths and so the game of fan-fiction of what might have been is often very kind to the likes of Cobain and his ilk. The reality though is usually much less pleasant. In fact, it is accurate to say that should he have still been alive Kurt Cobain would most likely be a complete embarrassment or at best a Salinger like recluse. (more…)

Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Whitney Houston’s Funeral

Westboro Baptist Church to Picket Whitney Houston’s Funeral

The much hated and despised by everyone Westboro Baptist Church have plans to picket the private funeral of Whitney Houston, because they apparently ran out of homosexuals, Catholics, Jews, and African Americans to hate. If you ever want to get yourself worked up or just have a laugh at extreme racism, check out their website or Wikipedia page.

It’s not 100% clear why they’re picketing her funeral, especially since Houston was a devout Christian who began her career singing at the New Hope Baptist Church in New Jersey, where the funeral will actually be held. The implication from Westboro leader Margie J. Phelps is that it is because of Houston’s large gay fanbase. Phelps had tweeted, “F*ck call her gay icon. WBC is picketing that funeral,” and “No R.I.P. Whitney Houston. You don’t live your life serving self & sin, stealing God’s glory & get peace.” Oh what a lovely bunch of people. Good luck to them though since the funeral is invite-only.

Other famous funerals they picketed were Matthew Shepard, Michael Jackson, and Steve Jobs. It’s best not to stress too much over this radical group, who spreads nothing but hatred for everyone different from themselves. Houston may have gone on a serious downward spiral in her later years, but I wish her peace in her death.

The Black Hole of Internet Boredom

Internet Boredom

This week I haven’t felt particularly entertained. There weren’t as many sharable internet gags. I feel let down. People of the internet, you have let me down!

Where are the 80s accordion songs? Where are all of the amusing yet short lived internet memes? Where were all the cats!? Sometimes I feel like the internet has failed me. Sure, I can look up the Oxford English Dictonary of “community” when someone asks for it on twitter and yes, it’s a great source for news and information if you don’t have cable (guilty!) but when the most entertained you’ve been all week  was watching Melissa & Joey on Netflix, something is wrong.

Do you hear that people of the internet? I had to resort to former child stars on a new television show for entertainment! I think it’s time we stepped up our game. I’m expecting a lot more from you next week. I want hipsters and Rube Goldberg machines. I want guinea pigs in funny hats! I want clever witticisms and one liners. Heck I’d even settle for a new list of Harry Potter pick up lines. But no matter what it is get it together and get it together fast. I hear there’s another season of Melissa & Joey on Netflix now and so help me if I have to watch it…there will be hell to pay.

Presidents Day & Lincoln Fun Facts

Presidents Day is right around the corner and I’m sure some, if not most, of you will be having a long weekend relaxing, hanging out, and maybe sipping on a few cold ones.  Since that day has significance to the American people, why not take time to read some interesting facts about Abraham Lincoln, the greatest president that has ever lived. Bonnie Bear, Paul McCartney Is Mad Old Tho, And Other Grammy Fun

Last night I skipped the Grammys for my weekly Movie Night. There we watched Midnight In Paris and I managed to feel the sort of high-brow joy that makes me happy. Meanwhile an army of young Tweeters were rattling the collective cage of indie fans and people with a respect for classic rock alike.  (more…)

Grammy Noms and Predictations

12 Feb

music

Adele wins everything. No, but seriously. Every year people make their predictions as to who they believe will win and what category. The following few paragraphs are going to be my rundown of the top four categories, what my guesses are, and what I believe should win. The music industry surely has seen a lot this year.

Best New Artist

This is a toughie. We have several interesting acts, all fairly talented, and some more mainstream than others. If I were to sum this up, it’s like a highschool battle between the geeky art kids and the popular preps. On one side you get Bon Iver and Skrillex, and on the other you get Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, and The Band Perry.

Who Should Win: I’m routing for Bon Iver, with a close second to Skrillex. Out of all these artists Bon Iver is the most underrated and probably the most original.

Who Will Win: Although Nicki Minaj will be a favorite, my prediction is The Band Perry. Indie and Country are adored by award shows. This group happens to be both. And they have great music, so…

Song of the Year

I’ll be honest. When I saw that Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” got nominated I felt it was a pity move by theindustry after destroying his reputation (although he partly did it himself). But the song is pretty damn catchy regardless. The other songs in the running are all also very good, but there is such a wide range of genres that this gets very tricky.

Who Should Win: “Rolling In the Deep” is the most recognizable  track in this category. It has not only been a top seller, it set records on the billboards.

Who Will Win: If the voters go with the obvious choice it will definitely be “Rolling in the Deep.” If they go with obscurity it will be Bon Iver’s “Holocene,” which is equally beautiful.

Album of the Year

After all the horn tooting about making a revolutionary album, I don’t think that the voters will be googoo for GaGa. There’s a lot of heavy-hitting competition in this category and “Born This Way” is just a bit too ethereal and overdrawn to gain favor.

Who Should Win: Foo Fighters put out a valiant effort with “Wasting Light,” but can their rock-driven album be enough? Probably not. Besides, Adele is the Amy Winehouse we always wanted– silky voice, old skool production. We love it.

Who Will Win: Adele’s “21″ is the obvious winner. No one else has a shot in hell.

Record of the Year

Adele is the predicted Queen of the Grammys. But will she be crowned tonight for her music contributions? We see some lovely work from Mumford and Sons, Bon Iver, and Bruno Mars. As well as the fan favorite by Katy Perry, “Firework.”

Who Should Win: Mumford and Sons has been recognized but not nearly as appreciated as they should be.

Who Will Win: One word: Adele.

Optimistic About The Bourne Legacy

I enjoyed the Bourne movies.  In fact, I have all three DVDs.  I enjoyed Matt Damon as Jason Bourne.  Having just found out that a fourth movie, The Bourne Legacy, is coming out I am very much looking forward to it. (more…)

It’s Halftime In America, Be Afraid

Guys, have you heard it’s half time in America?! This is good news as for most of us as we were already accepting that it was not only the fourth quarter for America but for the entirety of the planet. Everything changed yesterday though, you see we had asked ourselves “If we can’t trust the Mayans who can we trust?” Luckily an advertisement reminded us of the obvious answer to that question, Clint Eastwood.  (more…)

Groundhog Day 2012 – Whooooo Cares!?

2 Feb

groundhog

“….and it’s always February 2nd, and there’s nothing I can do about it!”

Good news for all those into the idea of celebrating made-up holidays like Flag Day or Chanukkah. Today is February 2nd, which means it’s Groundhog Day, that special day on the calendar where the national media focuses in on an over-sized rat in an irrelevant town in Pennsylvania. Anyone who graduated from kindergarten knows the deal; if the groundhog sees his shadow, we have six more weeks of winter, and if he doesn’t, spring blooms pre-March and Al Gore makes another documentary. It’s all there in L. Ron Hubbard’s Scientology: A New Slant On Life.

In case my sarcastic-enthusiasm isn’t coming off strong enough, let me reiterate; Groundhog Day is Dumb, and anyone who actually believes a beaver-wannabe named Punxsutawney Phil (a drug-dealer nickname if there ever was one) can predict the weather probably should have been beaten publicly by a sex-starved nun a long time ago. The only true reason to celebrate this fictional holiday is that Comedy Central will usually just put Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day on repeat.

(Side Note: Has there ever been a ska-punk rock band named the Punksutawney Phil’s? If not, I shot it. Also, shoot me an e-mail if you want to join my new ska-punk band.)
