Plutonomy: The New Democracy!

As unemployment continues to swelter in the August heat, many Americans are coming to the realization that things aren’t really changing. In fact, they probably won’t change for a long time.  With the Bush tax cuts ready to expire, the midterm elections are going to be about taxes. The rich shouldn’t have to pay more, the GOP argues; the country needs them to invest in businesses to raise the poor from the mire.

And they won’t pay any more. The rich will remain rich, and the poor poor. Unemployment will stay high for years, you can count on that. And that means fighting off the tens of thousands of dollars of debt – an American instinct pre-recession – is no longer feasible. If you didn’t have the means before, you never will, unless you want to work away your youth to be a doctor or lawyer.  The middle class will dwindle until most reside in the lower class, earning average incomes. The rich will eventually control us with their money, as they have already begun to do.

The tax cuts will stay in place, unemployment will stay high, the Democrats will lose, and everyone will get used to a little less. But hey, we could all do without that new flat-screen and our gas guzzling SUV’s. Maybe the recession’s not such a bad thing.
