Kobayashi, Chestnut turn Competitive Eating into ‘Rocky III’

As America slowly forgets about the game of soccer, it is this writer’s opinion that competitive eating should emerge as the next national obsession. After all, studies continue to emerge that America is overweight, so rather than fight who we are, we should embrace the truth and turn it around into a form of entertainment.
And few sporting events have ever offered the same level of entertainment as this year’s Coney Island hot dog eating contest.
Just like everything, America came out on top, with California native Joey “Jaws” Chestnut winning a fourth consecutive I.F.O.C.E. Nathan’s International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island by downing 54 dogs in the ten-minute period.
(The contests official title is a mouthful, which obviously leads its ways to a series of atrocious eating-puns.)
However, the real story occurred when Chestnut’s biggest rival and six-time champ Takeru Kobayashi (who was not competing this year due to contract issues) attempted to storm the stage and was taken down by police.
Onlookers showed their support for the 32-year-old Japanese competitive eater, chanting “Let him eat!” as police officers handcuffed him and took him into custody. Major League Eating President Richard Shea (photo available HERE) claimed Kobayashi “tried to jump on stage during the awards ceremony to disrupt it.” He has been charged with trespassing, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.
The scene was reminiscent of Rocky III, when top contender James “Clubber” Lang (played by Mr. T) crashed a ceremony at the Art Museum in Philadelphia, where a statue was being dedicated to heavyweight champion Rocky Balboa.
Next step is to get Kobayashi a Mohawk and 30 lbs of gold jewelry, while creating a montage of Chestnut eating hot dogs with Carl Weathers on a California Beach.
